Why This Fundraiser Means Everything to Me
Hi, I’m Justin Schoen, founder of Cap My Crown.
I started Cap My Crown when I was 16 years old after my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2024.
If you’ve ever met my mom, you probably know her for her big red hair. Her hair has always been a huge part of who she is. It’s her crown.
When I found out she needed chemotherapy, one of the things that scared me was knowing she could lose her hair. Cancer was already taking so much from her. I didn’t want it to take that from her too.
That’s when our family learned about scalp cooling, a treatment that can help cancer patients reduce chemotherapy-related hair loss. My mom used scalp cooling throughout chemotherapy, and it allowed her to keep her hair.
But we also learned something that didn’t seem fair: scalp cooling can be expensive, and insurance rarely covers it.
For families already facing copays, deductibles, medications, treatments, and all of the other expenses that come with cancer, the cost of scalp cooling can put it out of reach.
I believe the size of a person’s wallet shouldn’t determine whether they have the opportunity to save their hair and preserve a sense of dignity during the fight for their life.
That’s Why I Started Cap My Crown
Cap My Crown raises funds for HairToStay, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to cancer patients who otherwise may not be able to afford scalp cooling.
But our mission has grown beyond fundraising.
We are also working to educate patients and our community about scalp cooling, increase awareness that this option exists, and advocate for greater access and insurance coverage.
What began because of my mom has become a mission to help other cancer patients and families facing the same decisions we did.
Every $1,000 raised can help a cancer patient “Cap Their Crown” and help cover the cost of scalp cooling.
Cancer takes a lot from a person. Hair may seem small compared with everything else a patient is facing, but for many people, it represents identity, privacy, confidence, and dignity.
With your help, we can give more patients the opportunity to keep something that matters to them.
